The Parklands on the Gold Coast are in for significant development as Queensland begins preparing infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games to be held in 2018.
Plans for the Commonwealth Games Village on the 29 hectare site were recently released.
The project, to be headed by development firm Grocon, includes the construction of 30 buildings and a retail centre along with developing nearly seven hectares of public open spaces.
The Premier of the state, Campbell Newman, praised the quality and design of the project as he revealed the plans and was confident that the athletes village will be a sought after place to live after the Games, continuing to be resourceful for the broader community.
With an investment value of nearly $500 million, the project will create about 1,500 jobs in the construction of up to 1,200 permanent homes varying from apartments to townhouses.
After the Games, these are expected to be initially rented out by the Government before being gradually sold off over a 10 year period.
