Dress for Success: The Keys to Correct Interview Attire

If you have just graduated from university or are about to graduate soon, you might have already started the exciting but sometimes dreadful process of job hunting. If you have a job interview soon, it’s time to prepare, and as you probably already know, first impressions can mean everything.

Since the way you dress for an interview is so important, here are a few tips to help you increase your odds at landing the job.

Dress according to the industry you’re Targeting

If you’ve applied for a job in the banking or financial industry, it is important that you wear a suit and tie, closed in shoes and maybe even cufflinks. Now if you are in the scientific, academic or creative industries, there’s no need for a tie – a buttoned-down shirt will suffice.

For women, there are more options, as you might choose to wear a pantsuit or a professional looking dress, but a nice blouse and pencil skirt is also an appropriate combo.

Your shoes are very important

We might overlook our shoes, but just in case your interviewer decides to look down, make sure they’re polished and in a good condition. Make sure they’re closed in – women might get away with peep-toe shoes, but sandals are usually not appropriate.

Make a statement

This does not mean you should be too risky – men can just add a pop of colour with cufflinks or an interesting tie while women can try a nice blouse or jewellery. This is meant to show them you have a sense of style and personality, but you don’t want your outfit to stand out too much, as that might have the opposite effect.

It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed

Hiring managers won’t penalise you for overdressing, however, if you look too shabby they won’t bother calling you back.

Remember that looks aren’t everything, but for your interviewer they might be an indication of how important that job is to you, so dress accordingly. Also, make sure you prepare for basic interview questions and you are set.
