Elevators are getting a makeover before the boom

With the world’s population increasing rapidly at the same time as the demand of urban living, high rise living is becoming very popular. However, one industry which is well and truly benefiting from this demand is the elevator industry.

This need for more people to live on less land has driven technological advances in elevators such as increased speed and traffic control.

The elevator is a major element of tall building construction with seven billion elevator journeys being made all over the world, every day. The industry is therefore looking at ways to improve the elevator.

One of these improvements is energy efficiency. Elevators consume 10 percent of all high rise electricity. By harnessing the energy produced by the elevators, engineers are hoping to be able to power lights and power points within the building.

Scientists are also looking at improving traffic management. GPS systems will be inserted into the elevators to manage elevator traffic efficiently.

Finally, scientists are looking at speed enhancements. Many manufacturers are looking to create elevators which reach 20 metres per second. Currently, Toshiba’s lift, the Taipei 101 office tower in Taiwan, is the world’s fastest elevator reaching speeds of 16.8 metres per second.

This research and the increased installation of elevators has increased yearly growth in Australia from 2010 – 2015, to 2.5% each year and made a revenue of $1 billion. This is forecasted to continue to grow.
